Businesses and entrepreneurs gathered at St Thomas Centre, Ardwick, Manchester, to hear about and discuss social value and how it is increasingly important for all businesses.

Attendees were welcomed by Louise Logan of NG Bailey who also gave an overview of the Procure Partnerships Framework. The PPF was established to support public sector bodies to procure contractor partners. NG Bailey covers the decarbonisation and retrofit lot that covers England part of the Framework.

Following Louise, Paul Vicario of GM Business Growth Hub. Paul discussed social value vs social impact and why social value is becoming more important. He also talked about how to measure social value and linked to that, how it is increasingly included in bids for public contracts.

Bringing things to a more local level and the practicalities of social value work, attendees then heard from Daniell Musaheb of Ardwick Climate Action. He talked about delivering positive change in the local area. He also previewed the afternoons activity.

Then followed discussion groups with attendees having discussions with one of our key speakers, talking about one aspect of social value, then after 10 minutes moved onto another table for another discussion.

Topics varied from measuring social impact to opportunities to work with local organisations on projects around social value. Ten minutes wasn’t enough for some people, but many discussions went on during lunch.

The afternoon was taken up with volunteering work at a local school, to highlight the importance of air quality.

We talked to some of the attendees.:

Louise Logan from NG Bailey

"The GM Business Growth Hub have supported NG Bailey in a number of different ways. They've provided us information, advice and guidance on the social value landscape and what the future of that looks like in that area.

They also directed us towards courses and training around increasing knowledge on environment and sustainability, which is a massive part of our operations and the way we do business in the carbon reduction sector. That's been really useful for us.

Other courses from them have been around wellbeing for our colleagues. Wellbeing is also a big part of the way we do business for our people. Providing some support around how we can increase wellness for our colleagues and what's available in that sector around training that we can speak to our colleagues about, but also into our supply chain as well."

Peter Saxby from Travis Perkins

"Today's event, this is the first time I've done anything like this, particularly with NG Bailey. And certainly as an event, it's really been interesting to talk to other businesses and get their understanding of where social value and social impact fits with them. And how they see that the whole piece works within the framework of working with NG Bailey and their client base.

I certainly think for us as a business it’s about the way that we operate in that space and how we make that work within our customer base. I think as a business we’ve got some very clear ideas about social value, social impact and how it works for us. I think one of the takeaways for me is how we align that to a particular customer in a particular area over a particular amount of time or a period.

So definitely some takeaways, certainly a lot to think about. It’s certainly an area that I feel as a business and as a group, we can add value for NG Bailey and probably our wider customer base as well. It's something that we're seeing more of as a business within our varying business groups. We look forward to further opportunities to come and talk and discuss the way we can help and impact in this space as Travis Perkins or the wider Travis Perkins group."

Louisa Blakemore from the Armed Forced Covenant

"Everything we do is about social value and social impact. What we do is we work for defence relationship management, and we look after the Armed Forces Covenant. The Armed Forces Covenant at its most basic is about social value. It's about social impact. It's about what you do for your employees as an organisation. And so really everything we do revolves around social impact.

It's been really good to see that actually it's important to lots of different organisations, and the organisations are really open and willing to what social value is for them as a business."
