With more manufacturers recognising the commercial value of a strong brand, marketing is no longer viewed as a secondary business function. Industry data shows increasing investment in branding and marketing activity across the sector, with average spend rising from 6.7% of revenue in 2024 to 9.5% in 2025, as businesses look to stand out in competitive markets, win new customers and attract skilled talent.*
To help Greater Manchester manufacturers harness this opportunity, GM Business Growth Hub recently hosted a specialist branding workshop, providing practical insights into how brand strategy can drive reputation, growth and resilience.
The session welcomed three key speakers:
Amy Lister, founder of Good Bubble, who provided an honest account of her entrepreneurial journey, highlighting the challenges and opportunities involved in building a consumer brand. Drawing on her experience of growing the business through strategic partnerships and licensed collaborations, Amy demonstrated how strong brand positioning and customer engagement can help businesses increase visibility and accelerate growth.
Next, a practical session led by Tom Haworth from GM Business Growth Hub, exploring how manufacturers can use AI tools to develop brand guidelines, assess website performance and improve brand consistency across digital channels. Participants also learnt how proactive brand management can help strengthen customer experience and support wider business objectives.
The workshop concluded with Stephen 'Paddy' Dyson from HMG Paints, who shared how the UK's leading independent paint manufacturer has built a strong reputation over almost a century through innovation, technical expertise and a consistent approach to customer service. Attendees heard how effective branding can help build trust, support premium positioning and establish long-term customer relationships.
Lisa Lalor, Managing Director at Neville Johnson, commented:
"Really enjoyed attending GM Business Growth Hub's Building Reputation, Trust and Growth event. Great insights from Amy Lister at Good Bubble and Stephen Dyson from HMG Paints on the realities of scaling manufacturing businesses and brands. It was a timely reminder that sustainable growth is built on more than great products. It requires trust, a clear value proposition and consistent brand execution.
Thanks to Kate Knight and the GM Business Growth Hub team for organising such a valuable event and for their continued support of Greater Manchester's manufacturing businesses."
The event forms part of GM Business Growth Hub's ongoing programme of fully funded support for Greater Manchester manufacturers and an upcoming series of tailored workshops. By bringing together industry expertise, practical learning and peer networking opportunities, these workshops help businesses develop the skills and knowledge needed to remain competitive and grow.
