This article explores how imposter syndrome can show up in women’s leadership journeys, and how confidence grows through experience, reflection and supportive environments.

Most people start the new year reflecting on how we want to grow, lead and show up in our working lives. For many women in business, this can bring a renewed focus on confidence, ambition and the impact they want to make. With International Women’s Day 2026 (08 March) in mind, and its focus on balancing the scales through shared progress, it’s a timely opportunity to reflect on how confidence and belonging shape leadership.

Growing confidence isn’t only about individual development; it’s also about creating environments where women feel supported to contribute, learn and lead.

As careers develop and responsibilities increase, confidence can evolve in different ways. Experiences often described as Imposter Syndrome can appear during these moments - not as a reflection of ability, but as part of learning, stretching and stepping into new possibilities.

Understanding Imposter Syndrome in a new light

Imposter Syndrome is a common experience, even among capable and experienced professionals. Rather than reflecting a lack of skill or ambition, it often shows up when people are trying something new, taking on greater responsibility or stepping into leadership roles.

It may show up as:

  • Questioning the value of your contribution
  • Downplaying achievements or success
  • Setting exceptionally high standards for yourself
  • Feeling the need to be ‘’fully ready’’ before moving forward

Recognising these moments as part of growth, rather than barriers, can be a powerful mindset shift, allowing confidence to develop gradually through experience.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t mean you’re bad at something; it means you care about being good. This is something to be proud of.

Leadership confidence develops through experience

Leadership is often associated with certainty, yet in reality it’s built through learning, reflection and adaptability. Confidence grows when people are supported to try, learn and build capability in real-world situations.

For many women in leadership, this journey includes moments of uncertainty when stepping into senior roles or making important decisions. Shifting the mindset from “needing to be fully ready’’ to ‘’being open to learning’’ can create space for meaningful growth.
