Emma Connolly, Wellbeing Specialist at GM Business Growth Hub talks about what imposter syndrome is, the impact it has and how to overcome it.
Whether at work or in personal life, feeling like an 'imposter' can happen suddenly, making you doubt your abilities and attribute success to luck. The phenomenon of Imposter Syndrome can be defined as “the persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills.”
Imposter Syndrome can also have a negative effect on our wellbeing as the stress that it generates places pressure on our mental health. People experiencing Imposter Syndrome may constantly feel inadequate, attributing their achievements to luck rather than skill.
This constant self-criticism can lead to stress, burnout, and a decrease in overall mental health. The fear some feel of being "found out" can also prevent someone from pursuing new opportunities, holding back personal and professional growth.
Top 3 tips for defeating imposter syndrome-
-
Share your feelings – it is more common than you think!
-
Celebrate your successes – reflecting on your achievements can boost your confidence.
-
Challenge negative thoughts – when you catch yourself thinking negatively, try to reframe those thoughts and focus on facts and evidence rather than feelings.
If you feel like you need more support defeating your inner critic, we offer fully funded support to businesses and the self-employed in Greater Manchester.
