What is neurodiversity?

It is estimated that at least 1 in 7 people are neurodivergent and have unique traits, talents and challenges. Neurodiversity encompasses a wide range of conditions including ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and Tourette's syndrome.
Creating a thriving environment for Greater Manchester Organisations
As part of our company values, we have a welcoming workplace for colleagues who are neurodivergent. We talked to some of our colleagues about their experiences being neurodivergent and their tips to create more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual.
Jeannie Paschalis, “As the workforce development specialist, I find that being neurodivergent a benefit because it allows us to think outside the box…. my brain works so quickly I can see an outcome quicker than everyone else and usually no one else has thought about”
We also asked our LinkedIn community about the biggest challenge neurodivergent employees face in the workplace. The most common answer was communication (67%), while training and structure came second at 17% each. The importance of communication is highlighted in the video as well. You cannot create a welcoming work environment for everyone, including those who are neurodivergent, without clear communication.
Jason Checkley, “I think from an employer it’s about understanding, checking in with that person making sure they understand where they are up to in terms of their targets or tasks for the week, how are they getting on, what support do they need. It’s about checking in and making them feel human and valued.”
Thanks to Jeannie Paschalis, Jason Checkley and Alexandra Saffer for sharing their experiences.
