With this week’s World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October, we’re focusing on wellbeing in the workplace with our wellbeing specialist, Emma Connolly.

Emma shares some insight on Wellbeing strategies in the workplace to tie in with this year’s theme of ‘Wellbeing in the Workplace’.

The Importance of Mental Health First Aiders in the Workplace

The focus on mental health in the workplace is growing, recognising its crucial role in our overall wellbeing.  As such, just as we have first aiders for physical injuries, Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) are essential for addressing mental health issues in the workplace.

What Do Mental Health First Aiders Do?

MHFAs are trained to support colleagues experiencing mental health challenges. They're not therapists but are trained in spotting the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues.  MHFAs provide non-judgemental support and reassurance and guide a person to seek professional support.

Why should employers consider training MHFAs?

Not only are MHFAs a valuable investment in employee wellbeing, they also help to build an open and supportive culture around mental health. MHFAs also give employees the opportunity to speak to someone in the workplace about their mental health, giving them the opportunity to speak to someone before their mental health gets any worse and allow for faster recovery for the employee.

How can I find MHFA training for employees?

Here in Greater Manchester, we have the benefit of the GM Skills Map, the destination for skills development and training. With 1800 courses, 700 fully funded option and 170 providers this is the place to visit for training.
